Back to Main Product/Ordering Page Wormania! Wormania! offers a rare opportunity to view images of live worms at work. Developed partially under a grant from the National Science Foundation to do videomicroscopy of live earthworms, the 26-minute video incorporates footage of worms in their natural habitat and in the laboratory. Unique scenes include nightcrawlers mating and other worms foraging for food outside their burrows. Microscopic views of young worms show the rhythmic beating of their five pairs of hearts and demonstrate how anatomy and physiology can be taught without having to dissect the worm. One of the most captivating sequences is the baby worm hatching from its cocoon. Billy B. Brennan, a popular entertainer and educator, performs four new songs: Worm Anatomy, Worms Making Worms, Locomotion, and Talking About Worms. Synopsis: Worm Woman visits the Brennan kids, Shannon (14), James (16), and Julian (11). Busily involved in their daily activities, they're not sure they have time for a lesson about worms. But with Worm Woman's magical red light ("so I can see worms at night..."), and help from their songwriter dad, Billy B., the kids learn about worms--how they move, their role in soil ecology, how worms breed, and how to set up a worm bin for composting organic waste. "In
future years millions of people (and billions of worms) will thank (Mary
Appelhof) for showing us all how we can eat better food by growing gardens
with wormpower." "Wormania!
makes learning about worm composting fun and interesting. This video and
the accompanying Teaching Guide could make worm composting part of every
school's curriculum and waste management strategy. Understanding how worms
function gives a valuable perspective on the interconnectedness of life
systems. Lessons that bring nature into the classroom provide children
with an opportunity to experience the foundation of life on earth. These
lessons will help build life-long respect and compassion for others, something
this world sure needs more of. I commend Mary Appelhof for her contagious
enthusiasm and dedication to the wonderful world of worms!" "Education
can be fun as well as informative and, in this case, very slimy, icky
and yucky! Great name for a rock band. . . but no, it is Mary, Bill and
crew bringing us their humor, knowledge, creativity and visionary thoughts
on a subject seldom "embraced". .. . the worm. I have played
with and fished with and gardened with the worm, but I had no idea how
much I didn't know about this generous creature." "My
class absolutely loved the Wormania! video. They sing the songs with enthusiasm.
Wormania was the piece de resistance for our worm unit." |
