A
garden this size produces way too much vegetative waste
to be processed by the quantity of worms present in the
bin, so students set up a three bin turning system for
compost. Materials are stacked in one bin until it is
full, preferably with layers of diverse materials and
water being added. Then another bin is filled. By the
time the second bin is filled, the first pile is forked
over into the remaining empty bin. This turning aerates
and mixes the materials, also enabling outside materials
to reside in the center of the pile where they will be
exposed to higher temperatures from action of the thermophilic
(heat-loving) bacteria. The process is repeated---turning,
emptying, filling, and finally, spreading the compost.
